The Everest Base Camp trek is one of the world's greatest walking journeys. This guide covers everything from permits and packing to altitude acclimatisation and the best teahouses along the trail.
The classic route begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,860m), followed by a 12-14 day trek to Everest Base Camp (5,364m) and back. The trail passes through the heart of the Khumbu region, home to the Sherpa people.
Key highlights include Namche Bazaar, the bustling gateway to Khumbu; Tengboche Monastery with its stunning backdrop of Ama Dablam; and the final ascent to Kala Patthar (5,545m) for the most spectacular view of Everest.
Altitude acclimatisation is critical. The itinerary includes acclimatisation days in Namche Bazaar (3,440m) and Dingboche (4,410m). Drink plenty of water, walk slowly, and listen to your body.
For luxury travellers, premium lodges along the route offer en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, and gourmet meals. The Yeti Mountain Home chain and other upscale lodges have revolutionised comfort at high altitude.
Permits required include the Sagarmatha National Park entry fee and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee. Your trekking company handles all permits as part of the package.
